The Allwrights were looking to follow a similar route to our Big Trip California but had an extra week to spare. They wanted to see and do as much as possible, with a mix of big cities (including LAS VEGAS), national parks, desert, wildlife and beaches. They wanted to see giant sequoias (southern YOSEMITE ticked that off) and to catch some American sports, so we lined up a San Francisco Giants baseball game, and also tracked down a batting cage near their hotel in SANTA MONICA so they could give it a go themselves. Hiking and water sports were on their agenda, so we included several interesting walks along the way and added stand-up paddleboarding on a lake in MAMMOTH and surfing lessons in MALIBU. And they also wanted to experience a bit of RV life – San Francisco to Las Vegas worked well for this, as it meant they could camp out in Yosemite and still get to visit DEATH VALLEY on the way back to LA, which is off-limits to RVs in August.
