Having tested the waters with a bespoke two-week summer holiday to Croatia, the Littles decided on a more adventurous fortnight in Costa Rica for their follow-up tailor-made trip with us. Aiming for the Pacific Coast rather than the Caribbean, they wanted to visit the cloud forest, to surf, and to see some of the country’s amazing wildlife – whilst avoiding the high-season crowds in Monteverde and Manuel Antonio. After a night in the VALLE CENTRAL, we sent them off to the SARAPIQUÍ, which combined rainforest lodges with white-water rafting (also on their wish list), and then to LA FORTUNA, where they took dips in volcanic hot springs and stayed on an eco-farm. Laidback SANTA TERESA and MAL PAÍS, on the southern Nicoya Peninsula, were included to give them the downtime they wanted over Christmas, but with the added attraction of some stunning surf beaches (a big draw for the whole family); the LOS ANGELES CLOUDFOREST RESERVE provided an atmospheric alternative to busier Monteverde. Along the way, we got them trying zip-wiring through the jungle, birdwatching at dawn, and sea-kayaking along the coast of a little-visited wildlife refuge – a trip we discovered whilst updating The Rough Guide to Costa Rica a few years before.
